Teach India Program & Youth Reach Program for English Education

Prayas Juvenile Aid Centre (JAC) is implementing its educational programme entitled, ‘Community-Based Alternative Education for Marginalized Children Living in Urban Slums of Delhi’ with financial support from Tech-Mahindra Foundation, Mumbai during the periods February-March 2009, and April 2009-March 2010. The Centre for Educational Research and Development (CERD), New Delhi known for its expertise in Education and Human Development disciplines was requested by TMF, Noida to undertake an evaluation of Prayas’ Alternative Education Programme supported by them and to provide an expert assessment of the programme outcomes.  The Evaluation team consisted of Dr. Ranjana Srivastava (Team Leader) and Dr. Geeta Menon who undertook evaluation during the period 19th to 22nd October 2009 and visited selected Alternative Education Centres of South Delhi. The present report is the result of Evaluation Team’s extensive discussions held with the Secretary, Mr. Amod Kumar Kanth and the Education Team of Prayas JAC. The current assessment has gained immensely from the various school visits, observations of class room teaching and learning processes and in-depth interactions of the members with teachers and children of alternative schools/ centres apart from detailed discussions with children’s parents/ community members and Prayas Project team members. The observations, assessment, and recommendations of the Evaluation Team are summarized in the various sections of the present Report. The Team gratefully acknowledges the support provided by Mr. Vinod Khanna, Principal Consultant, Ms. Shashikala, Programme Coordinator, Tech  Mahindra Foundation, Noida and Mr. Veer Narayan, Programme Manager and the entire Education (ERTC) team of Prayas for providing relevant documents and facilitating the evaluation in various ways. The CERD Team is particularly thankful to the ERTC team for their open minded attitude towards the observations and suggestions made during the Evaluation and hopes these will be taken in their true spirit of commitment to the cause of education.
