Launch of Child Marriage Free India Campaign at Kusumpur Pahadi, New Delhi

The Child Marriage Free India Campaign under Access to Justice for Children Project initiated by Nobel Laureate Mr Kailash Satyarthi, which was launched on 16th October 2022, in 26 states, 500 villages, through more than 75000 women leaders in the country. Today the campaign in Kusumpur Pahadi, New Delhi was launched by Shree Amod K.  Kanth, Founder and General Secretary of Prayas JAC Society and Founder Chairperson -DCPCR/DWSSC & Former DGP as Chief Guestwhich was organised by Bal Vikas Dhara. The other dignitaries who were also present namely Advocate Bhuwan Ribhu- Eminent Lawyer and Children’s rights Activist of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Ms Rajani- CEO of Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Advocate Ravi Kant- Head of Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation, US (India Chapter), Mr. H. S. Phoolka, , Senior Advocate of Delhi High Court, human right’s activist,  at BastiVikas Kendra, C-Block KusumpurPahadi, where more than  1100  women, children, volunteers, Pradhans, teams of Bal VikasDhara, KSCF and Prayas JAC Society were part of the same. The Campaign started with a welcome speech by Mr Devendra Baral, CEO of Bal Vikas Dhara. Mr Amod K. Kanth addressed the gathering by saying aboutthe nuances of child marriage which hinders the physical and mental growth of a child along with blocking their path towards attaining education. He asked the children about their views on the recent changes regarding the age of marriage in the Child Marriage Act and later on, he also shared his own viewpoint on this.

During the launch, Mr. Phulka emphasized that child should get education not work. Mr. Ravikant shared about the legal angle of Child Marriage and congratulated everyone the beginning of this campaign.

At the end the campaign was inaugurated by lighting mashaals, candles and oil lamps by the women and children of Kusumpur Pahadi who then continued with a candle march in the community of Kusumpur Pahadi while chanting slogans against child marriage.

‘Naya Prayas’ Project of Prayas JAC Society was started in Kusumpur Pahadi, in 1993 to help domestic child workers, their families and the migrant daily-wage earners. The organisation started a vocational training programme with specialisation in handicrafts and ‘cutting and tailoring classes’ which turned into ‘Textile and Dress Designing courses’ over the years for the poor jobless women and later on also started education centre for children. Our intervention continued in the areas of child protection, education of children, women empowerment and skilling with 5000 community people which includes children, women and other target group in Naya Prayas Centre at Kusumpur Pahadi.
