PRAYAS SKILL DEVELOPMENT CENTRE - SRINAGAR (JAMMU & KASHMIR)
Keeping in mind the emerging consciousness of changing fashion trends, #Prayas JAC Society, has introduced cutting and tailoring courses with local embroidery in its branch office at Shalteng, Srinagar Jammu & Kashmir. This course has been specially designed for those people who have an interest in Sewing & those who want to supplement their family income and are learning sewing as a means of livelihood. An adept garment maker needs to be creative and imaginative like an artist and the same time be neat and systematic in her work. Knowledge and understanding of fabric types, decorative stitching, correct method for measurement taking, economical layout and drafting, updated knowledge of fashion trends etc is of prime importance for a successful pattern maker. This course lays great emphasis on all these basic tenets of fashion technology.

We firmly believe that after completing this course, a lot of students can pursue their career as a skillful garment maker.

Due to Urbanization and mass conversion of agricultural land into colonies and small industrial units in Srinagar district, the land holding of people is decreasing day by day and because of luring prices of agricultural land, farmers are shifting towards other trades and there is a need for skill development and vocational training programmes.

Especially for semi urban girls, it is becoming a vital source of earning livelihood. Keeping all these factors in view, Prayas JAC Society has organized 6 months skill development training programme on cutting and tailoring with local embroidery as per NSDC guidelines for 40 girls hailing from semi urban area of Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir through our branch office Shalteng, Srinagar J&K.

In the first phase of the training, the trainees were taught the full course of cutting and tailoring i.e. running stitch, fabric types, decorative stitching, correct method for measurement taking, economical layout and drafting, updated knowledge of fashion trends hemming , tackling, button holding & button sewing.

After the completion of training all the trainees will get a completion training certificate as per NSDC. During winters, the valley witnesses cold weather for more than four months and there is a great demand for Pheran ( A Cultural Outfit ). On stitching, these workers earn an amount of Rs: 10000-15000 per month. This unit acts as a model for the income generating activity for the other girls of the area and also creates awareness for self-employment and a sense of motivation.
